In a shared room
Text can be useful when speaking would disturb someone or expose a conversation to people nearby. It does not request a camera or microphone. Still consider who can see your screen and whether notifications or shared devices reveal private information.
Video exposes both the frame and, with a microphone, background audio. Use a room where other people will not accidentally appear or be overheard. Headphones can reduce echo, but they cannot prevent your microphone from capturing someone nearby.
When tone matters
Video can make a smile, pause, or friendly tone easier to understand. That can help with a light conversation, though it also makes the exchange feel more immediate. You may have less time to think before speaking.
Text allows a slower pace, but tone can be misread. A short clarification is often better than assuming intent. Do not feel that you must answer a personal question just because you have time to type a thoughtful response.
On a device or network with limits
Text needs no webcam and avoids transmitting live audio and video. A supported browser and a functioning connection are still required. A restrictive network can affect the peer connection in either mode.
Video needs a working camera, and a microphone for voice. Browser and operating-system permissions both matter. If the preview does not start, use the device troubleshooting guide rather than repeatedly trying new matches.
Compare what the other person can learn
| Exposure | Text | Video |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance and background | Not shared by camera | Visible in the camera frame |
| Voice and surrounding sound | Not shared by microphone | Shared when audio is active |
| Written personal details | Can be copied or captured | Typed messages can be copied too |
| Technical connection data | Still processed | Still processed |
Avoid treating either mode as a no-data or no-recording guarantee. Read the privacy policy for the actual processing and safety context.
Switch by choice, not pressure
If you want another mode, Stop and return to the home controls. Choose the mode that suits you, not one a stranger demands. Video permission is a browser decision, and you can decline it.
Standard video and Unmonitored video are separate sections with different safety expectations. Unmonitored includes an explicit-content warning and skips routine automated checks; it is not required to use standard video or text.
A quick decision checklist
- Do I have a private, appropriate space for a camera and voice?
- Are my devices working, and am I comfortable allowing access?
- Would I prefer time to write rather than speak?
- Am I sharing only information I would be comfortable having copied?
Read the text guide, the video guide, and Safety if you need more detail. Both modes let you use Next or Stop.
