Start with a keyboard, not a camera
At the home chat controls, confirm that you are 18 or older and agree to the rules. Choose Text Chat and wait for another participant in the text queue. No account is required for this mode, and it does not request camera or microphone access.
The message box becomes available when the connection is ready. Type your message and use Send or Enter. Use Shift+Enter if you need a new line. There is no promise that a particular topic or person will be available.
Make a first message easy to answer
A simple, specific question gives someone something to respond to. “What is a film you would watch again?” asks less of a stranger than “Tell me everything about yourself.” You can share a hobby before asking about theirs, but let them choose how much to say.
Typing can give you time to reflect; it can also make tone harder to read. Ask for clarification before assuming someone means harm. If the exchange becomes uncomfortable, you can leave rather than trying to win an argument. Try the conversation starter guide for more ideas.
Move on without pressure
Next stranger ends the current connection and looks for a new match. Stop returns you to the home screen. You do not need a stranger's permission to leave, and you do not owe them contact details because you enjoyed a conversation.
Where reporting is enabled, Report ends the match and submits the concern. Avoid repeating an abusive message to other users or posting a stranger's identifying details publicly. The community guidelines describe behavior expected from participants.
Text is lower exposure, not zero exposure
Keeping your camera off avoids sharing a face, voice, and background. Messages can still reveal personal information, and a partner can copy or capture them. Do not send passwords, verification codes, financial details, an exact location, or a private image.
Be cautious with links. A shortened or unfamiliar link may hide its destination. Do not install software, send money, or sign into another service because a stranger asks. Technical connection and safety data are still processed; read the privacy policy before assuming an anonymous chat leaves no trace.
When text is a good fit
Text can be useful in a shared living space, on a device with no webcam, or when you prefer reading and writing. It can be a way to begin gently if talking on camera feels intense. It does not guarantee compatibility, kindness, or a lasting connection.
If you later want face-to-face conversation, Stop first and choose random video chat. The mode comparison guide helps you choose based on privacy, devices, and your environment.
If messages will not send
Check the status at the top of the chat. The input stays disabled until the peer connection is ready. A disconnected partner or a failed connection can prevent delivery. Wait for a connected status, try another match, or reload after stopping the session.
Standard chat may apply configured safety checks. A blocked message or temporary safety-service failure should be shown in the chat, and cannot be fixed by rapidly resending the same message. Use Contact if the problem continues.
Adults 18+ only. Confirm the rules before entering. No account required for random chat.
